Impact Day 2010

On Thursday, January 28, Nelsen Middle School students in Renton will be experiencing their 2nd Impact Day. Nelsen students will be listening to and interacting with speakers from the community addressing their careers, experiences, and healthy life choices.  The theme this year is, “Do What You Love.”

40+ speakers from various careers and interests will present at Impact Day.  Careers/Topics include: Boeing engineers, lawyers, firemen, hip hop dancing, Parkour (urban gymnastics), chiropractors, life coach, volunteer/non-profit, nurse, FBI Agent, WA State Patrol, and Scientist.  They will encourage students to do what they love, both now and in the future.

All Nelsen students will hear from 6 different speakers.  Please take the opportunity to discuss these presentations with your students, so this day will have an even bigger positive impact on our young people.  If you have questions or would like further information, please contact Scott Jones, Counselor at Nelsen Middle School (425-204-3013).

Confirmed speakers:
Stefeny Anderson – Renton Farmer’s Market
Willie Austin – Willie Austin Foundation, Health and Fitness
Lee and Kathleen Bailey – Renton School District, Director, Sec. Ed.; Security
Dr. Leslie Braxton – Pastor, New Beginnings Church
Mary Alice Heuschel – Renton School District, Superintendent
Randy Matheson – Renton School District, Director, Community Relations
Rob MacGregor – Renton School District, Asst. Superintendent, Learning & Teaching
Heather Miller – Renton Police Department
Debbie Rundle – Renton Technical College
Danny Pearson – Coordinator, 100 Black Men of Greater Seattle
Lynn Pilkington – Valley Medical Trauma Nurse
Andy Wappler – Puget Sound Energy

Also, 2 High School Seniors who will present at Impact Day have started a non-profit organization called, “Play It Forward.”  They collect new soccer balls and used sports uniforms to donate to children in Africa.  If any of you have old uniforms (soccer, basketball, etc.) that you could donate, please have your child drop them off in Mr. Jones’ office, and they will be given to Katie and Emily on Impact Day.  Ask your friends if they have any old uniforms stored away.  It’s a fun way to thank them for their efforts.

JOINING ASB SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES AT NELSEN.

It is very easy to join sports and activities at Nelsen!  First, a student needs an ASB card, which may be purchased from Mrs. Folkerts in the attendance office.  Second, a student shows up for the activity!  Announcements are made throughout the school.  For our sports teams, a student does need to try out and our traveling team does make some cuts, so the student does need to attend all practices.  All of our sports teams will have a 2 week period of everyone practicing, then the traveling team will be chosen.  If you have any questions, contact Becky Schlosstein, at rebecca.schlosstein@rentonschools.us

LATE STARTS.

Just a reminder, ALL RENTON SCHOOLS will start 90 minutes late on most Fridays during the 2009-10 school year.  For a schedule of all late start Fridays, go to the calendar at the Renton School District website http://www.rentonschools.us/Home.aspx, and click on the 2009-2010 School Year Calendar on the right-hand side.

FROM THE NELSEN NEWS, January 2010
Welcome to 2010!  It seems like just yesterday we were talking about Y2K!  With the New Year come New Year’s resolutions and mine is to continue to spend as much time as possible with my family.  This is a good time to work with your child on goal setting both for things to accomplish as a family member (walking the dog, doing the dishes, etc.) as well as goals for completing this semester and school year successfully.  Nelsen offers many opportunities to assist students, such as Math Help, Homework Club, and Gateway.  Counselors are available all day and teachers offer extra help before and after school.  All you have to do is ask.
Principal’s Quote of the Month
Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination.

ATTENDANCE NOTES
Flu season is here—please be sure to call the Attendance Office at 425-204-3010 if your student is absent.  Students need to be absent for three days before homework can be ordered.  It then takes 24 hours and may be picked up in the Attendance Office.  Call Luann to order homework or to let her know about an absence.  Thank you!

REMINDER— YOU MUST SHOW PHOTO ID WHEN PICKING UP A STUDENT FOR  DISMISSAL.

“IT’S ALL GREEK TO ME”
Come and audition for “It’s All Greek To Me!” - a collection of Greek Myths.  All grade levels welcome!  Auditions will be held Monday, January 25, Tuesday, January 26, and Thursday, January 28.  If your child is cast in the play, please put Thursday, February 11 on your calendar and plan to attend our short parent meeting at 4:30 p.m.  Questions? Email andrea.sylvester@rentonschools.us or ginger.montague@rentonschools.usCan’t wait to see the Nelsen talent!

Carrie's Note:  Each student receives a copy of the "Nelsen News", to bring home each month.  If you have not received one, or are missing the current issue, ask your child if he/she has it in their backpack, or binder.  Attached to each Nelsen News is a copy of the Calendar of the month.  Due to server limitations, I am unable to attach it or reproduce the same, in its original format.

Please be sure to ask your child for the Nelsen News at the beginning of the month, and regularly check with them for any other important school handouts!

The e-mail updates are not intended to replace regular U.S. mail, or written material sent through the students. The updates serve as additional notice, or a precursor of things to come, and help to rally parents and promote camaraderie.  This will especially help for upcoming events that may require parental support.

Thank you!
